Been toying with this, very nice! Lots of nice small features.
My favourites are;
Gradient Background
Film response curves for editing
Fire simulator built in to smoke settings now
Motion blur in cycles(!!!)
Anyone used this for Retopologising/UVing? Was talking to a friend about it and they were saying its got one of the best system's around for doing just that. Looking forward to trying it out

Aye; for a fair while now Blender has been excellent for that.
John, are we going to see an Introduction to 2.66 video?
I've never used Blender before, though I've always been curious about it. Has anybody here used Blender and 3DS Max (I'm sure there are a few
What does Blender offer over 3DS max in terms of modeling tools?
I'm going to download and try it out, I'd just like to hear other people's opinions on how they compare.
@Zepic - I learned the basics of 3d in Blender first, then made the transition to Studio max. Studio max can do pretty much anything Blender can do; (maybe minus the blender game engine) but Blender is still pretty powerful. Blender has fewer bells and whistles than Max but it's still extremely useful, and fairly easy to learn.
@Torch - I do most of my UVs in blender, because I don't have to deal with pelting or relaxing or modifiers like in max. You just define seams, select what you wan to unwrap then hit unwrap and bam its unwrapped.
Retopo is also pretty simple in blender, all you do is turn on snap to surface and then go at it with the various modeling tools.
I haven't played with much new stuff in Blender for a while, I may have to mess around with 2.66; looks like fun!

OP of this thread has made some video tutorials on both (and just about everything else). Here is one on retopology.
Here is a good UV Unwrapping video - First half is unwrapping with Maya then at around the 15 min mark he shows how to unwrap the same thing in Blender.

Been UVing and retopoing in Blender for years. I'm a big fan of Blender's UV mapping and never seen a reason to move elsewhere. I also find retopo in it pretty good, but I've not tried programs such as 3Dcoat, topogun so can't compare.
So with this new version i downloaded it and thought to give it a try but OMG. Man i can't find a darn thing in there. Anybody know of any DT or Gnomon style high quality tutorials for Blender? Spend some time in it but that UI... i just don't know.

Guys, guys, did you notice the orange outline on the tiles that are being rendered? They're so cool if you've got something easy to render, bright colours zipping across the screen, it feels like I'm living a sci-fi movie! It's kinda ridiculous how excited I am over this non-feature, but now I want to render things all day because it looks like the future.
Thnx carter. Only found sites like blendernation so far so this really helps. Not to say anything bad about blendernation btw. Just feels like it's more towards the hobby users. Bookmarked cgcookie and going to take a look at that dvd. It's mostly the transition that i need so that would help a lot .

Blender Nation is kind of the community news site, so it's really a mix of everything, professional and hobbyist.
If there's anything you find missing on CGCookie, have any suggestions, or have any kind of general feedback I'm always interested in hearing thoughts!
I find it hard to absorb information from the documentation the Foundation release with each new version. Your videos are invaluable Jonathan. It's immediately apparent what the new features are supposed to do and what they are capable of. Blender Cookie really is an invaluable resource. Thanks for all the hard work you and your team put in. Would like to see more open source on Concept Cookie too, like Inkscape, or Gimp.

ah cool thanks
Even if you can't add matcaps that way, you can still set up them up using the normal material editor.
