Boat Rigg - Help please!

Hi, first of all - not entierly sure if this is the place to post questions about rigging but I'll give it a shot!
I'm currently working on rigging a boat (polynesian proa/outrigger to be specific!) but I can't seem to get them sticks articulate the way I want.
The yardstick connects to the mast and to a rail along the portside of the boat. What I am trying to achieve is to have the yardstick always stay on the same side of the mast (portside) - WHILE still following the outer rail.

What I have going on at the moment is an RP solver from the base of the mast, to where the yardstick connects with the boom. IK handle is then animated along the rail.
Any help would be appreciated
