Maya 2013 Mirror Geometry || HELP!!

I'm trying to mirror a group of objects without merging them to the parent geometry. However, even though I have the merge geometry check box unchecked, it still merges the geometry together as one object instead of separate objects. Am I missing something I'm supposed to be doing?

I am not really sure exactly what you mean, but the mirror geometry tool will make one mesh when you use it. The merge option in the mirror geometry tool will the merge the verts after the mesh is mirrored. If you have a group of objects and you want to mirror them on the other side it is easier to group them together, and then duplicate the group, and just scale them -1 across whatever axis you want.

What do you mean by scale them? This is my first time touching the program and I have no idea what I'm doing...
