It about 2-3 weeks into it, but I need some feedback on the art. The mechanics I'm planning to set up later when It's more of a developed project. It is in CryEngine 3
..it's an exciting and realistic re-creations to the “Need For Speed” game “The Run”. We Also know as C4S,(Cry For Speed) to simulate a photo realistic real world environment that reproduces what only the the Frostbite 2 Engine could do but with the Free SDK of CryEngine 3
Here are some screen shots to compare to the real game:
I don't mean to sound like an ass, but you're copying and recreating a AAA game, in a different AAA engine, because of something to do with AAA graphics?
No offense, but you seem to be setting yourself up for colossal failure. Even with CryEngine's superior lighting, it seems like you haven't gone through it so far; the bottom right pic shows some fairly 'flat' lighting and shadows, the metal guard-rails don't look all that great, and I'm not even going to start on the assets you'd need to build to come close to something like even TrackMania 2. Add to that CryEngine's massively lacking Physics system (physics frequency is really slow, which is why they never let you have a go with anything faster than an army off-roader, especially when it's going to be in contact with a surface continuously).
Well, you sound like one. lol But yeah it's not much more than a 2 week progress so far. The pictures to compare are actually not color corrected in cryEngine yet, those are photoshoped for right now only (I know its not suppose to be photoshoped but I will get the lighting in engine later from sampling colors and setting, that's why it looks flat. I haven't run into any physics problems, so I will have to be aware of that. I know it's a huge task to make it keep up with a AAA game but what Engine do you suggest building it in? As far as realism goes, UDK is not up to the challenge and I don't have access to Frostbite 2. If you can think of a better Engine let me know. Even from what you have said I still think it has real potential to be a great project and it already is, but I thank you for your comments, I would rather have someone question it and tell me what they think and what could be wrong, than having someone just comment and say," Looks good".
It's not the how of you doing it, it that you're doing it.
Seems that if your goal is to "simulate a photo realistic real world environment that reproduces what only the the Frostbite 2 Engine could do but with the Free SDK of CryEngine 3" then you should just be making a handful of corners and aiming for a few screenshots so people comment that it "looks good".
brendan, so he wants to do something with no practical purpose, who cares??!!
Good luck to you b4volpe. Im fairly interested to see if cryengine can run as a racing game, so will be watching. Looks fine for 2 weeks work, but as brendan says a long way to go. Things that jump out at me so far are that you will have to sculpt and detail the landscape terrain and especially rocks a lot more.
The rocks should be no problem, but im not sure you can have multiple levels of resolution in the terrain, which may be a problem for a racing game, as you want the ground next to the track to be very detailed, and the far away stuff not at all.
Can I also suggest that eventually you get some parallax maps or normal maps on the sand, as that will make it look a lot better.
Thanks, yeah it's more of a personal environment piece instead of a fully playable game, but it will be drive able and more important it will be fun. The rocks shown in action are a lot more blurred in the Engine than in 3ds max, but I think that's what you mean by a racing game working in CryEngine. Yes you can have different resolution squares in CryEngine and I will be trying that. The normal map on the sand is a good idea and a lot of more work has to be done but it has got a lot of attention already on Moddb.com and yes it will be better as time goes on, I will make sure of that. 4 realistic screen shots and a quick 3 second shot is going to be my next goal and then I'll work on game play. Thanks for the comments.
