Robot Alien - Low Poly

Hey guys,

Looking for some initial feedback on a small project I'm starting for February. It's a low poly game project for One Game a Month (either for UDK or Unity) in the style of a DS game.

So far I've begun modeling the main character, an alien robot, who crash lands in an area infested with zombie vegetables and plants. It'll primarily be an exercise in texturing for me, but any feedback on the initial model(s) would be appreciated too.

So far the model is 483 tris.

I'm thinking a third person camera, almost Diablo style, but not so far away.

Here is an update on the robot, with my first real attempt at a low resolution hand painted texture from start to finish. Any comments?

Woo, managed to get the first enemy modeled and textured: the crazy carrot, AKA, Carrot Top :) I think I'm slowly beginning to get a hang of low poly modeling, and hand painting. Slowly :)

I think it could use a couple optimizations, perhaps. Simplify the teeth to planes, and maybe make it 5 sided too.

Another update! Enemy #2: A Terror Turnip. Managed to get it down to 134 triangles, which I think is pretty good for something round :)

So far I'm enjoying low poly and low detail hand painting, goes quick, which is great for One Game A Month projects :D

Enemy #3: Bizarro Broccoli! I added a few more subdivisions to the tongue and "arms" as these will be animated in wavy kind of ways. Other than that, I think I've managed to pull off the look of broccoli. Anyone have any input on this? :)

I really like this guy, but your textures seem a little underdeveloped. They seem a little muddy and soft, You could add a lot more surface detail by just adding in some scratches and noise and maybe some small details like markings. The main issues is how dark and unsaturated your colors are. If you added in some more hues and increase the contrast all your small details will pop more.

I did a paint over to show you what I mean. I added some faux baked on glow around the red lights to give them some depth and just tweaked the saturation and contrast on a lot of the colors, plus added a lot of scratched and noise.

Thanks for pointing that out, it does look much better! I'll add some saturation and mode scratches to the robot, and probably more saturation overall :)

Enemy #4: Citricisor! A bunch of fruits joined together with an eye. I think the orange skin looks decent enough in a low resolution texture. It might not be the most inspired design, but it'll stand out against the others, and the animations should be unique too :)

I honestly don't know what to say, if this is good or bad but this is awesome. I don't even man. This is sooo awesome seriously.

These are pretty neat. The robot guy is great and I like your carrot guy. I feel like maybe the brocolli guy could work better without the eyestalks and it'd give you more polys to detail the mouth and give the leafy bit more of a mushroomy shape.

I don't think the orange (?) guy is really working at all in design or presentation.

I think across the board you need to work on really sharpening up your textures. It's extremely important when you're working with these sorts of low spec assets that you really make every pixel work for you. The Robot is working quite well in that respect. The veges could all use a bit of work.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, my texturing has always been my weakest point. I hammered them out pretty quick, so I'll go back and tweak them some more :)

Here is the latest WIP shot, getting a quick environment for everything:

I started a full time job about a week ago, so time is at a premium, but I try for at least an hour a day :)
