Hello all
My gpu is shit for cad (HD6950) I have had my doubts about it for about a year now. Textures don't render properly with this card and I am having serious difficulties in mudbox & modo (detail painting related). Served me well for games and such but enough is enough.
Also adding another 8gb of ram (16 max on my mobo) as 8 is just not cutting it which means I will lose a few ghz off the overclock (4ghz on a phenom x6) I don't mind dropping down to 36/7ghz for an 8gb ram boost.
So to cut a long story short what are your gpu recommendations for my new card?
My Software list:
Modo 601
Groboto v3
Mudbox 2013
World Machine
Photoshop (CS5/6)
Substance Designer 3
After Effects CS5
Unity 3d (will probably be UDK or Crytek once I get my workflow sorted)
Cuda is not on my wish list, I don't need it but I know most nvidia gpus have it and I am not bothered if the new card is amd or nvidia as long as it gets the job done well. Price wise I am not loaded but willing to pay for a good card within reason, I don't work for ID software :poly121:
Not sure if it's wise to keep the HD6950 installed as I can envisage possible conflicts both hardware and software on my win 7 install. I will probably do a clean install anyway. I have 2 monitors so I need 2 outputs.
Thanks for your time
Pete:)

Also if for any reason you go into Special FX (future proofing maybe?) may want to look at the GTX 580 and the one with most memory available as it's said to be one of the most efficient cards for GPU rendering which is becoming more and more popular.
Back to nVidia it is !!!
Many Modo users also praise nVidia and that's my main 3d app.
The Gainward GeForce GTX 580 Phantom 3GB looks a bit sick and I like the cooling system on the card "three 80mm fans, six heatpipes and a large aluminum heatsink with a copper base" now that should keep it cool also 3GB of GDDR5
My only nag would be the price (540 euros) but you get what you pay for at the end of the day.
Cheers
