Maya normal map cage distance

Hey,

i'm trying to understand how baking normal maps in Maya works and i have a small question. I always thought that cage projections work with tracing rays between the lowpoly model and the outer cage. But as far as i have discovered, the rays also trace outside of the cage. As u can see on the images below, the beveled detail on the highpoly sticks quite far out of the cage while it's still being projected in the normal map (the circular bevels are only baked partly it seems even though they are far out of reach of the cage). How is this possible?

I know that this question doesn't solve any real world problems, im just trying to understand how the cage baking works.
