I decided to start a sketchbook. but then Photobucket ruined it. 

I deleted my photobucket account after they tried to charge everyone 400 dollars to post images on forums. photobucket are scum, and this thread is ruined. if a mod sees this, feel free to delete this thread.

JamesArk: Thanks those waves were fun to make. playing with gradient maps and layer blending modes can be very fun and surprising, and when you get the hang of it, you can design a ton of semi random organic stuff. anything from waves to clouds to islands to chipped paint on the edges of objects, can be made with a gradient map and a few blended mask layers.

Lovely stuff going on here Omnicypher, I particularly like the gradient map maps, I've experimented with doing exactly that in the past but you seem to have it down far better than I ever managed.

im adding twist bones to a CAT rig to fix the hierarchy to play nicely with SkelControlLimb nodes in UDK.

Would you be up for doing a tutorial on how you plan and show map design? I can do real basic stuff like just overall shape and laying out where it is, but different biomes, depths, heights and environments is what gets me.

I want my game to be very consistent with boss battles, trying to place them where i can, and when i can, but a lot of it is placing it fairly so the player can enjoy the game, pay attention to the story line and not have to focus on a boss fight every 10 minutes or so, i find my game story at the moment to be a bit ...eh, its quite bland

This little graphy thing should sort of help me out when choosing where i should place boss fights, etc..

also, how would you design a floating island world map (like detailed and such) im not really good in that sort of expertise when it comes to designing overall levels, i have a really basic black and white map with a key, that is about it
