Hey guys,
heres my entry for the blizzard contest. I created a witchdoctor's voodoo lounge that would be found in fertile swamplands. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
You've got a lot of good things going towards this, I like the color choices, as well as a lot of the shapes and where they're placed are a lot of fun. You need a lot of work in two key areas though.
The first being your texture quality ie: The muddle colored rocks, the texil density issues are fighting against you. Take a look at a lot of blizzards textures and try to replicate them.
The second being some of your things don't make sense, like the gravity defying objects like the water buckets on a stick (reverse magnets maybe?)
hope this helps and good luck with the comp!
@gannon thanks for the advice! I agree, my texturing is definitely one of more weaker points. And nice catch on the water buckets! I modeled them on the shoulders of my character and never realized that the wood wouldn't stay hovering in air....? derp
@jackablade here you go, like I said texturing isn't my best trait
As a prop or environment artist you must also be a good concept artist. So being able to paint a good, expressive 2D image of what you model is the first step to getting your texture painting to the level it needs to be. Basically you need wrap something like this: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_luu6dlneXY1r6doaao1_500.jpg
Around a model. I mean not literally but the painting has to be there in 2D. Low rez meshes need you to paint in 3D detail. So being able to paint a 2D picture that looks 3D is important. It's key in fact.

Also, there's a section in this free magazine dealing directly with painted textures and creating environment pieces.
