3ds clothing clipping issue

Hello folks

I'm having a few issue's and would appreciate a hand. I have swayed more towards environment artistry as opposed to character design so i'm far from an expert here. I have modelled and textured a character from scratch including a separate trench coat. My issue is, the character model is clipping through the coat when animated.

Here is my model and his coat:

Here is the clipping issue:

Now i am aware the skin work is poor, but no matter how much i modify the skins envelopes, it still clips wildly. I understand that hypodermic deformers by bones pro would probably help but lies outside of my price range.

There must be a way around it that im missing, any ideas?

Cheers guys!

Keeping a very similar topology between the two models goes a long way, then you can assign skin weights easily between the two so they're both animating in sync.

It may also help to keep the outer layer geo a little further out in problem areas.

If the poly of the trench is lower then the character, then you will get clipping.

If both don't have the same topology, or at least close to it in terms of vertice position, that will cause clipping too.

You can either delete parts of the character body under the coat, or skin the character in such a way that his body deforms more to accommodate the coat.

If you need the character to have a coat during the game, but not one during a scene, then consider having two versions of the model (one coated, one not).

Awesome answers, stuff i should have thought of to begin with. I will up the coat polys, buff out a few area's and go over a walk cycle again. I will also try deleting the arms since it is completely wasted polys and causing problems.

Any more tips and tricks would be great, but never the less, great advice.

    Thanks again!
