Combining Curves

I'm trying to combine these two curves to make them periodic, but the Open/Close curve command doesn't seem to be working...any ideas?

The results its giving me are predictable, but I'm following along in a tutorial and using Open/Close command is the next step to make the curve continuous.

It looks like it is connecting them? It's just connecting from the opposite sides, so you'd need to reverse the point order of a curve so it's starting and end points switch places. I can't remember how to do that in maya though I'm sure there is an option for it somewhere.
