Assesment Test - 2D Rpg Level Layout

Hey Guys,

I know this may not be the right section of the forums but I didn't know where to post it.
I just got a task for an assesment test and it says that I am to create a graphical layout for a 2D Fantasy RPG. Since this clearly is a level design task and I am not hugely familiar with level design I just wanted to ask you geniuses out there some questions which might help me:

- Do you know any good resources regarding 2D RPG level design?
- Are there any good editors for creating level design layouts?
- What would you recommend how to create that level design layout? Photoshop? Flash? Hand-drawn?
- What games do you recommend which inherit a cool RPG level design?

I would just use photoshop with the grid tools, maybe make some tiles you put together and duplicate around before polishing it up.

A ream of grid paper is also invaluable. As for old school games to look at for design inspiration; I would look at the old isometric rpgs (Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate, Fallout 2?, probably a whole slew of these I'm forgetting...)

Hey, check out the games Odin Sphere, and Muramasa: The Demon Blade. THey have some pretty hip 2D RPG level design. Also, castlevania.

I'd use illustrator for a rough layout. If it needs to look pretty, I'd take it into photoshop after that.

@Memory: Thanks for your suggestions. Sorry I should have also mentioned that the game is isometric. I didn't choose that, it is part of the task. Any cool suggestions on that? (apart from Diablo, Torchlight, Baldur's Gate etc.)
