chains in unity3D?

I want to make some chains in blender for unity and now I am not sure what is better.

I need for sure over 100 segments and the chains are a straight line...
the player will not touch it but he will get really close to it.

should I just make 2 planes they cross each other and write a new 2 sided shader or should I make real chain segments? like 1 segment with 24 or 32 polys? this would then 3200 polys...

sorry I am new to unity and I am still learning.
