Tinkering with the projection distance or projection shell will probably make a difference. At the moment it's probably seeing underlaying subtools as being closest and projecting those surfaces as a result.
Projecting itself should only be needed if you plan on continuing the sculpt, or baking in zbrush vs a program like xnormal.
