Retopology of hardsurface humanoid models for animation

I'm currently struggling and in need of help.

What would be good method to retopologize hard surface models for games?

How to taclke such model?
Especially join areas such knees, elbows and shoulders.

Should the leg be modeled as a whole and knee pad separate so it won't deform with skeleton?
