Criminalympics 2013

Hello guys and gals! I just thought i'd spread the word of this awesome project underway at Landslide Studios in the UK. I'm currently a student of Games Art at the University of Teesside in the Northeast of England, on the same grounds as Landslide. The studio is manned by industry vets and a sprinkle of our University lecturer's (the founders), that have worked on titles such as Wip3out and GTA.

They are hard at work on a project called Criminalympics, which you can find the link to here

"The concept for Criminalympics is a modern adaptation of the classic Track and Field games packed full of new game design features and with an added criminal twist.

The slapstick and humorous game show format is simple; chose your criminal champion and compete in unique but challenging sporting events to reduce your sentence. Develop your character, climb up through the worlds most wanted leagues and have a laugh at your friends' expense!

The project, which was originally devised for xbox in 2002, has had an illustrious history involving many familiar names from the games industry today.

Make sure you check out our facebook page - Criminalympics - The Developer Diaries to find out more info on it's history and take a look at some of the original assets."

Anyway to cut to the chase and not waffle on, one of the desires of Landslide is to open up graduate positions that will allow graduates to spend time in a proper game studio environment, earning valuable experience with the opportunity to be hired on full time as well as getting credits on their CV's/Resumes.

Naturally us as the students and those staff involved want the project and studio to be successful as it benefits everyone all round. We get industry experience, the studio get's new talent and everyone gets awesome games!

I'm not aware whether something like this has been attempted before but we're all very excited about the prospect of what it could grow into and knowing how much the value of educational courses is debated in our field i definitely think this is a step in the right direction and who knows perhaps other Universities will follow suit.

So i'm just doing my bit as a Student to spread the word :), Thanks for your time guys and please checkout the Kickstarter page if you're interested. :)

Hi TeeJay, and thanks Fristwolf for mentioning our project.

I think it is hard to get across the concept and communicate the game properly. This is something we struggled with when we approached publishers and something we are finding now.

In answer to your comment TeeJay, the budget we are looking for is one to develop the brand and compete with the big boys, even 100k is under budget considering what we are planning to deliver. The problem with today's development scene is your are either one or the other, a big budget development or a casual game.
Criminalympics sits in the middle (although I think with the dawn of gesture control Criminalympics could really sit well with Durango as a big budget sports title), but if you want us to give you the sort of car crash entertainment that Burnout's Crash mode and FlatOut's Special events provode then you need to have something special! And that comes with a cost. When the new gameplay footage goes up you will understand what we are aiming for.

We have the old optimised assets from the Xbox/ps2 version we had and a cut down model is certainly something we could offer in with the investment we are after, but as an indie dev company we don't want this to be a one trick pony! This project will give us the bandwidth to develop not only the game but also the studio so we wil, be able to create jobs and have a sustainable studio, all with the expansion of the IP in mind.

Criminalympics is something easy to capture peoples attention and gain enthusiasm face to face.. We just need to do this on the Kickstarter site and hopefully win some support from people who are more than just sequal junkies.
We want to bring something new to the market.

Cheers and thanks for your feedback. It's nice not to just see reactionary posts and read something constructive.

    Best,
    Andrew

Well it looks good to me tbh, nice art direction. I would recommend building a prototype ASAP to show the gameplay and how interesting it actually is.

If you cant get the idea of the game you created across, you probably need to sit down and look at the idea again, and make sure the meat and bones of it is simple enough that you can pitch to a room of suites.

There's a new video up on the kickstarter page showing very early gameplay. Please give me your comments and make a pledge if you want to support us indie revs and give us the chance to give a few of you some opportunities! :)
    Cheers,
    A.
