Lead /Senior Environment Artist, Dundee, Scotland

Job Description
Ruffian games are looking for a skilled and experienced individual capable of leading/mentoring a team of artists to create environments of the highest levels of quality and consistency. The ideal candidate will have broad ranging creative and technical skills as well as a great knowledge of using multiple rendering engines and tools. This should be coupled with excellent leadership and mentoring capabilities.

We are looking for someone who can fit into our highly experienced, creative and passionate team. Someone who can squeeze every ounce of potential out of environment graphics technology and achieve visually jaw-dropping results.

Responsibilities
• Report directly to lead artist and work closely with all other department leads/ key stakeholders to fully understand the project vision, specifically in terms of environment goals.
• Partner with graphics engineers to implement impressive graphics technical solutions in service of that vision
• Create the environment asset quality exemplars for both internal and outsource artists to work to
• Master the environment art tools for the project. Determine the best use of these and develop a pipeline that allows other artists to utilize them easily, and productively contribute to the game.
• Manage and mentor other environment/technical artists on the team. Work with lead artist and art director to get the very best out of each artist and develop their long term growth.
• Assist lead artist and art director in generating/overseeing schedules, critiquing work and meeting targets

Requirements
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience in game development, preferably in environments
• At least 2 years’ experience as a Senior Technical Artist.
• A passion for environment creation and graphics technology, and a familiarity with a variety of rendering engines e.g. Cryo Engine, Unity 3D and, in particular, expertise with UE 3 would be a huge bonus.
• Excellent problem solving skills.
• Expert with a variety of industry standard software packages e.g. Zbrush, 3DS Max, Maya, Photoshop.
• Very thorough understanding of game pipelines, from initial design through to successful implementation
• Highly self-motivated and pro-active. The ability to conceive a solution and the confidence to push it through.
• Excellent communicator and team player. Able to clearly explain a solution and get everyone behind it
• A passion for video games
• A tinkerer at heart. Someone who likes to take technology apart till they know how it works and then do something incredible with it.

Bonus points for…
• Being part of a team that shipped a AAA game title, in the role of Technical Artist
• Experience in managing an art team
• Experience with shader development
• Experience with MAXScript, MELScript, C#, C++
