You can't compare Diablo3 to this, they're not the same type of game, engine or art-style let alone camera distance, I mean any game that lets you get this close to ogle your character is going to have much more refined art in terms of aesthetics and fidelity when compared to a more distant-art-wise game.
As for the faces: Those are some really pretty faces, I'm also surprised as to how much effort them put into the eye-shader to give that extra razz of life, these guys are seriously going all out!
I never got this sentiment, I mean in MMO's, you have the option of instances, seamless world, single sever group or even mutiple sub-server instancing, arena's, etc to try and close the gap between people as much as possible, and if the article is anything to go by, this game is going to be more or less like Tera and GW2 combined.
I usually find games that try and distance from the entire MMO base-line to be the ones that suffer, especially when they close themselves like Vindictus to 'small hub' like areas.
Why choose the one that offers less when the other one only gives and adds extra stuff?
Or maybe they are set to fullbright, with some sort of multiply effect applied to them to make them blend with the overall lighting ? I am pretty sure there is some trickery going on here - this is definitely not shaded in the regular sense. Not unlike the old Max Payne 1 images, actually!
Remember this :
... actually looking like this when realtime shading effectively hits the model (sporting a slightly different texture, btw) :
So yeah my take on this is : They made some very nice Zbrush sculpts/paintjobs/renders ... then used them as photosource for lowpoly models. Which can look stunning done smartly, but it also means that the models will not feature any kind of facial animation or expressions, and that the lighting will likely be very flat.
Now there is nothing wrong with that if it works well - but it does lock out a lot of cool opportunities for storytelling and dramatic lighting.

No, no.. It's what we needed in the MMO genre! With the features I've read, it looks like it's going to be something of a next-gen Ultima Online.
If it is truly different from what we have now then I'm all up for it, but then Tera was supposed to be different as well, sure the combat was great, but after awhile, it started to stale just like most other MMOs, with its endless grinding.
Lineage Eternity also looks great as well, but id sooner them just be RPGs instead.

Nothing compared to what Tera promised since it promised the world, and we all know where that budget went :P
It also doesn't help that many people thought Tera was going to be F2P, hence why it was put on such a high pedestal.
Lineage is a mess of a game, 4 hours to beat the end-boss of the game with a full team of Dev's who also couldn't defeat the boss.
@Pior, nice one! Also, I don't think they're using 'Full Unlit' textures on the model, alot of it seems them using Valve's papers to create the shaders (like Half Lambert - the picture of the Orgre and Man under the building shows this nicely).
Its the overall attraction, the big idea behind it all.
Im not a bit fan of eye candy, but the way its presented makes it hard not to want to have a try at this game.
Wow the art direction is pretty stunning. Gorgeous looking game. Really reminds me of living in the Med. Hope they can iron out all those glitches; meshes popping in wrecks my head. I see it too much in Skyrim.
I also agree with the faces looking 'off'. They don't seem stylised enough for the rest of the game; plus yeah those full-brite textures.
I've following this game since its first appareance in the korean game news portals.
One of the things i love of this game is the character art, the females are very cute and hot. The engine is very well optimized and it's one of the best looking mmos in pc nowadays (better than some triple AAA games).
In the character editor, in a video, there was a character that looked like Geralt of Rivia (The Withcher). You can toy around with their face editor a lot.
What I appreciate is that they didnt make the cities you encounter just a few huts an an npc, instead some of them actually look like large functional cities full of people.
the trailer they had before wasnt joking, apparently they really do full scale city populated with tons of animated npc.

but I cant stand with the geometry popping, pretty much still not public beta I guess.
, im not really an MMO guy,
so I hope witcher 3 can bring the similar big living city promise ,

While I guess they could use a stipple transition or something, I doubt there's much they can do about such obvious LOD pop.

Fuuuuuck, 50 people worked on this only? On their own engine? For an open MMO game? Being real-time action based? With said art-style? AND DRAGONS?!
I really bloody hope this game comes out ASAP and succeeds.
I haven't bought the game so i have no idea

And yeah, those character shots. Good lord.

The bets are off !
It seems very appropriate for MMO faces. Bright shading, scalable models density-wise, and the texture can be very low.
Fun! Now I'll stop the derail

Art is actually good
Sadness me the way that so many great mmo's are made, and that I probably won't have the time or patience to play them
[edit] Fixed typo! Thanks Blank

I am so amazed by those insane amount of content without sacrificing their "realistic" asthetic

New vid here. The faces do seem uncanny.
For a mmo its good.
I mean when you need ugly faces you can always try the vanilla skyrim Char editor. :poly124:
I think the char editor alone can be sold standalone for alot of money in my opinion.

The faces we see are often made by asians with asian preferences, it doesnt mean that another faces are not possible.

Man... If I could export character to FBX.. I would pay serious buck for it .
