Im currently working on a project based off of another persons concept. I sculpted the trees a little differently would this hurt the piece as a whole if I strayed from the original?

thoughts?

Here is the rule of thumb:

Stray from the concept when you're going to make it cooler, MORE interesting. If you can improve on the design a little that is a great thing.

Don't stray from the concept just to be lazy. Showing work that is based off a concept but different in obvious ways(ie: you didn't want to put in the effort to match the detail/style/etc) is a bad thing.

Showing you can accurately match a concept is a very good skill to have, showing you can improve on a concept is also a very good skill, but changing the concept for arbitrary reasons isn't a positive thing to show, generally.

Though knowing how to translate 2d shapes into 3d shapes is very important as well, and often its not a straight forward process(and many concept artists cheat perspective and things like that), but you'll still be expect to retain the "feel" of the work. Same goes for optimizing things that are excessively complex in 2d but you need to represent in 3d with limited budgets, but this is more the technical aspect of asset creation than it is changing stuff just to be lazy.
