Is it possible to generate a vertex color shading in 3dsmax starting from an occlusion map texture?

From memory you have to select diffuse only in the vertex paint modifier, then hit "assign"

just rewatch the tutorial i linked you on the other issue, its the same problem.
unwrap your model, bake an ao map and apply it as vertex paint afterwards.
or did i get you wrong? (basically what noors said, i just realised i'm a parrot
)
