Nope - until now there was no way to properly pass custom normals to Cryengine. I *think* they were exported fine, but the engine just ignored them (or vice versa). If I understand correctly this update should fix this - and if that's the case that's HUGE. Will try it tonight!
They finally made it work right. Good god. It's been way too long - but now almost everything is fixed and it works beautifully. I was just warning some friends of mine just how terribly buggy this engine is, but this update really does it justice, now.

What was happening? I wasn't aware of this bug; were normals flipped incorrectly?
