Hey smart folks, having a little maya 2012 issue here. Like the title says when I set a mesh as a Template (either directly or through layers) it's display stays "normal" instead of going to the usual grey-wireframe. Wondering if this has happened to anyone else before and if it's a display driver issue or if I inadvertently hit a hotkey that changed the display setting. I tried google already but everything that came back was alpha or x-ray related.

It seems like either a general display setting or something with the video drivers that just decided to bug-out. That's why I thought I might have hit a hotkey without realizing.
If it does, well, check the colour settings
If not, I have no clue. Does actually BECOME a template, though, even if it doesn't display as such? I never really use them, so I'm not sure what properties they have... I'd have a poke around in preferences. Maybe there's something in there.
And if worse comes to worse, you can delete your Maya folder in MyDocuments to reset everything. Just be sure to grab any custom shelves, &c.
