multi material question

Hi all, thanks for taking the time to open this thread.

I am quite new to the game dev community and have a question that i'm sure can be answered quite simply.

I am having trouble working out how to map a material to coordinates. For example.

I am painting a layer onto a cliff face.

However as I go around the corner the sediment layers should be parallel to the ground, and instead they deform.

I'm pretty sure this has something to do with xyz multi materials but I can't find any info on how to do it.

Could anyone point me in the right direction?
