Is it possible to merge materials without attaching my objects in 3dmax ?
basically it's the same function as attach objects, in the editable poly modifier. Only without attacking the objects together. This means it will have to match all the materials id's to the a new multi/sub material.
hmm.. Example: i have a forest, merged into a single max file.
Now i would like to keep all the object's, plants and trees as they are. but it would be great to see all these multi/sub textures from this forest into one multi/sub material, with matching material id's.
Is this possible ? Thanks

Personally I don't see a point here cause eve if you export this it will not help you in engine cause same object would need to be drawn multiple times as by material count. Usually this is very ineffective solution.
But, this is assuming you've already setup appropriate material ID's on the non-attached forest. If all objects have a Mat ID of 1, for example. Then applying this "clone" material to everything will not do what you think it will.

You can attach all your objects, then use Detach By Material using any of the scripts above.
