After 3 max level characters and god only knows how many hours I'm still noticing new stuff and consistently appreciating BL2's art. You guys did a fantastic and memorable job.
Man I love the texture on that weapon crate, the colors are fantastic. Did each artist do their textures start to finish, or were they handed off to someone for the stylized line work?
So sick!!! Mmmm, that weapon crate. Probably my favorite asset of yours. You the baking master!! Well... Looks like I'll have to follow in your footsteps and post some stuff too.
@Augh
Im glad you are enjoying the game. Its also nice to hear that the little details and extras aren't getting lost.
@Sean VanGorder
Thanks! That texture is actually one of the few that I got to do in full color. Because of the colorization tech a lot of textures have to be muted or grayscale and unfortunately Im not the best at making the color masks work like I want. To answer your question though, every artist does their own complete textures. The inking/line work is one of the most fun parts for me!
@JasonLavoie
The guns were a lot of work. Haha. As far as showing flats, ill check into that and get back to you. I would love to show you the sniper texture. Im pretty sure there are only 10 12 unused pixels on that sheet. Im not sure what you mean by tint base system. If you referring to how they get skinned, that is a whole can of shadery worms. We actually have an art book coming out at the end of the month that will have a tech art section detailing some of that process.
@WiredKnight
James! Its been a while. The high-polys are actually a series of render passes from zbrush comped in photoshop with a few other tweaks. I wanted to do something that was a bit stylized but still showed all the detail. I dont recommend it. 3 4 renders in, you will want to rip your eyes out.
@Pale-Face
Thanks! Sometimes I think I spend too much time making things clean. Glad people are noticing the extra effort though.
Was about to post asking if you had anything more to show ^^
Great stuff, I can keep looking at it.
Just wondering, how much time did you spend on these pieces, for exameple the weapon chest and the rocket launcher in your first post.
Hey guys. I just wanted to say thanks again. Also, we are currently putting together one big thread to showcase all of the awesome artist and work that went in to BL2 so keep an eye out for that very soon!
Joeriv – Thanks! The chest was just about 4-5 days. The launcher was a bit more involved. I think it was almost 4 weeks from start to finish. (There are a lot of extra little steps you have to do to integrate into the weapons system.)
Teessider – Thanks! The textures usually start with photo sourcing that we run through a process to simplify it. From there it is mostly hand painting details, shadows, highlights, inks, etc... The final look you see in game is all done in the textures. The outline around everything is part of the post process. The shaders actual don’t do anything all that special. Haha.
SsSandu_C – Zero is my favorite!!
LaurenceGEE – Keep me posted on your progress! I would love to see it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers.
Did you guys work with a tint base system when it comes to your guns (or gear in general).
@Amatobahn
Its probably a little too crazy. Haha

Are the textures hand-painted? or are they realistic with the shader making it look like the way it does? or a combination of both?
I love the art direction!
Now I have to go buy the game.:thumbup:
