Any tool similar to Z-Spheres?

Hi everybody! ive been a bit quiet in the past and also havent been updating my programs much.
I was wondering if theres an alternative to Zspheres out yet. Personally i dont like Zbrush and i use mudbox instead, so having to buy zbrush only for the zspheres is a bit annoying. Im interested in standalone programs but also max plugins.

The Skin Modifier in Blender's actually a really good suggestion by JR. I had a fiddle with it a while back when it was still in beta and was quite impressed.
