Hey all. I had the pleasure of working on the environment, and lighting team at 343 working on Halo 4 along with many many extremely talented individuals. This is some of the word I contributed. Thanks for looking.
Please note that I did not make the mech or the mech environment. I did the lighting and effects for that environment and for the e3 promo stuff. I also did not make the floor in the outerdeck area, nor the rocky area outside of the infinity.and some prefabs I did not make however pretty much everything else was done by me, modeling, texturing lighting etc.
I am also open to new career opportunitys and or freelance in 3d, lighting or concepting. Thanks for looking!
Incredible modeling and lighting. What was the thought process behind the diffuse though? Did you guys even use them in a lot of areas? I noticed a lot of the game seems very flat/stylized when it comes to actual materials, giving it a pretty distinct look.
Gotta get in here. Played through the campaign from midnight when it launched until 5 am, and then finished the following day. I would want to take this opportunity to say thanks for helping to make one of the most visually stunning games I've ever played.
Just curious, do you know if any of the character artists have/ will post their stuff? I can't get enough of the armor variants.
Did you do the high poly of the mech? If so could you post it? Also you did a high poly of that complex, was the entire thing uniquely unwrapped and baked?
Yes! I've been waiting for an environment art dump. I can honestly say I've spent more time staring at the environment in this game than actually playing it, job well done! The lighting is phenomenal also, I dont know how you squeezed this much pretty out of that system.
Wow, thanks so much for all the positive feedback. I am glad you guys like the game, and especially the art. I was an honor to work on the game
bounchfx - Yes, the diffuse is rather limited. I dont know how much I can say about the tech side of things, but generally we aim to keep diffuse textures at a minimum and rely more on lighting, normal maps and spec to achieve the look for the most part. Diffuse maps are generally pretty simple or flat colors.
threesidedpolygon - Thanks man! I am not sure if/when the character guys will post but I can be sure to bug them about it
AlexCatMasterSupreme - Thanks man, I did not make the mech, I just did the lighting for that shot for e3. The mech was made by an artist by the name of Dan Sarkar.
IronHawk - hey dude! long time no see! We def gotta grab a beer soon!
futurepoly - haha, man me too. Sadly, I am terrible at Halo 4. Everyone at work would destroy me.
Thanks again guys for the positive feedback, means a lot, especially with so many of you guys also so talented. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I will do my best to answer them. Other than that you can add me on facebook or cghub or my blog. I usually update my blog often.
That some incredible work! The lighting and use of color in this game is unbelievably good. I was just talking to a workmate about how simple the diffuse textures are for a lot of the environmental assets and how much you guys did to create all the contrast in the lighting (at least for the sci-fi elements).
Love your renderings dude. It's awesome work too. Ill have to talk to you sometime to see how you're able to get that chromatic aberration type effect. That's in photoshop right?

The shots look awesome! The colors and lighting in the third one is amazing!
Bookmarked your portfolio for inspiration too
Nice work Chris! We should grab a pint at the Central some night.
