Environment Artist Question/Should I stay in a course

Hello everyone, I am 19 and live in Canada. I have a passion to be a environment artist and i am currently in an animation course in Mohawk college.

However in this course it seems to be a waste of time as the only class that relates to my career choice is a 3D class which is learning at a super slow pace. I could have learned everything we did in that class so far in 1 hour at home. I have already completed a basic fundemental art program certificate at Sheridan college to improve my drawing and art capability.

Now my question is, could i just drop this program and take a year or two making the best possible environment artist portfolio i can manage and try to acquire a job in a small studio from that. Or would it be better to stick in this program and spend the next 2 years working on things that really wouldn't be helpful just for the degree.

Your input would be greatly appreciated.

A degree does not equal a job. It is going to come down to how good your portfolio work is. I think a better question to ask yourself is "If I quit school, am I going to be dedicated enough to work on my portfolio for 16 hours a day to really make up for it?" There are plenty of resources out there to help you learn but you need to be committed to taking advantage of them.

when I was your age (holy crap I'm old enough to say that now), I quit a traditional drawing class because I "already knew how to draw," and 15 years later I regret it. You might learn a lot of things that don't seem to relate to what you want to be, but some of those fundamentals, or even some of those random other subjects, might help you in some way.

It's like avoiding anatomy because you "don't want to be a doctor," and want to model monsters, but now we all know that anatomy is an important part of being an artist.

Don't let the feeling of 'wasting your time,' stop you from achieving your degree.

What are you studying anyway? what subjects and all that?

Well in my animation program we have 5 classes; 3D drawing class, 3D class (the slow learning one), Image and Inspiration drawing class, Life drawing, story boarding and animation basics.

Most of these are drawing classes which help me of no use since i have already mastered the art of drawing in 3D/2D in my year at Sheridan and as i've said the 3D class learns way to slow.

I know that if i took the time i could easily spend 10+ hours each day on my portfolio but spending 4 days a week at school would immensely increase the amount of time it would take to finish it.

    Mastered, huh?

Wouldn't want to call in to question your skills, as I've not seen them. But in my experience, the moment you start thinking you've mastered something is the same moment your mindset becomes more harmful than beneficial.

Your right i worded it wrong, what i should of said is that i am able to draw any 3D image/ scene on paper very accurately.
