Maya Normals Issue?

Hello there polycounters :)

I come here asking for your help with this issue. I was modeling when I noticed the funky way of shading of specific faces of the model. Took some render and got this: wtfwhy.jpg
Not sure if it was a normals problem, I hardened the edges and got this:

Better, but still I don't know what caused the issue in the first place as I was modeling normally with no special procedure. Why does this happens? Will be there problems with my model in later stages? Was it really a Normal Issue? Sorry for the novice questions but I am intrigued.

    Try Normals>Conform as a quickie, but your geometry could be messy, and/or could have polygons facing the wrong direction. Go into smooth mesh preview; anything that doesn't smooth properly is something you'll need to look into fixing.
