hey there, working on the drake critter for the Arenanet art internship contest. Still pretty low detail, but I would like to know what you guys think so far.
I started working on scales and skin. But I would like people's opinion: should I go for less detail? I am wondering if all the little scale details will get lost and washed out in the game. Of course the diffuse map will support the details more when it is finished, but I wonder if I should go with a more simplified and graphic approach to make the character pop more in the game environment.
I think your details look cool, and I don't see any real issues with them. The only problem I see is that the major forms could still use some work. The concept itself is a weird character to begin with because he looks off balance.
Was that concept given to you or is it your own? Sorry, I'm not familiar with that particular art test.
Anyway, my first impression with the concept is that while he does look unbalanced there, your highpoly looks even more unbalanced than the concept itself. Anyway, I think the snout could be a bit shorter, and the shoulder area where his leg connects to chest should be a lot thicker to make him look more sturdy. I would probably also bulk up the hind legs a bit and make the tail longer so that he is more balanced.
Anyway, these are minor changes and I think you are doing a great job so far. Keep it up.
The sculpted details look pretty good, nice stuff.
I think you're lacking in silhouette, however. The overall shape is very soft and doughy. He needs some more stark shapes, some harder angles in areas like his snout, eyebrow ridge, back legs, etc.
If you refine his silhouette more I think you'll be in pretty good shape.
Thanks for the input, guys. Much appreciated. I changed some of the silhouette, did more sculpting and started polypainting. BTW- spines, plates, teeth and eyes are just placeholders. I have not started texturing them yet.
Yeah, I haven't really gotten around to the tail yet. This is still being painted and is certainly not finished. Just wanted an idea if I was going in the right direction before I got too far into it. I agree the head needs more work, too.
Realy nice model, my only critic would be about the nose : regarding the concept, it looks like he has more details/marking here and on your model is a bit flat (in sense of texture, not modeling).
