I am doing a project for university and are just trying to get a better understanding of the workflows that people use when creating effects (rain, snow, etc.) inside UDK.
Do you prefer to make the material and then the particle system?
Do you prefer to use post process or planes rather than particles?

But no 2 cases are ever the same, so some particle systems that rely heavily on a material setup would be a totally different scenario.
It just really comes down to what you're most comfortable with!
