I decided to remodel the main character for the final project I did with my group when I was at Uni. Needless to say, I'm going for the anime-ish look and I just completed the High poly modelling and in the process of low-poly.

I have a small dilemma on how to approach the low-poly around the waist where the coat tapers off; whether I should model out the character with the coat separate or keep a separate mesh between the upper part and lower part.

Looking good so far but a few points before you go too far with the low-poly. First the forearms are a bit long (the upper arms seem to be a good length). The calves may be a bit too long too. If you still want long legs though I'd say at least lower the knees. Also, you have some pinching going from the eyes to the nose. As for creating the low-poly there are numerous ways of approaching it but I wouldn't make the whole coat its own piece. If the coat has thickness you could have geometry on the inside and outside of the coat. You could also just make the top piece and bottom separate and the attach them after baking. Of, course this is in no way the only way to do things.
