So I'm now struggling a little to get my shadows and lighting to work well. It seems that when I have accepts dominantDirectional shadows ticked on my speedtree factory actors terrain properties, the plant is just all shadowed out if it is not receiving direct light. Consequently, when I un-tick this it seems that the materials and lighting just look to bright for an object that should have some dimming of its diffuse color. Also, how come you can't mess with a UDK static mesh's lightmass settings in the terrain properties like you can with a speedtree factory actor? The following pictures show the same thing on the UDK tree I borrowed for now. The back side away from sun is just blacked out. Not what you would see in the real world for sure.:\
You could try the transmission (cheap) or the real SSS in the material editor to make some of the light go through the leaves and appear on the other side.

Ummm, in English please:).
It also helps to open up the other UDK packages and see how they did leaves.
Don't use translucency. Just plug in 0.5 constant into the transmission and 50% of the light should go through the leaves.
