Safe & CHEAP Hotels around GDC?

Doing a pre-emptive search on hotels in the convention center area. I know there are listings on the GDC website, but they're expensive.

Does anybody know of (or stayed at) a hotel that was near the convention area, but in a safe location, and was relatively cheap[er than the other hotels]?

I stayed at the Hotel Stratford in Union Square the past two GDCs. It's relatively close to the Moscone, decently cheap, clean, pretty safe imo, and was right around the corner from the Polycount meetup spot.

Edit: Also, it's just up the street from the Powell St. Bart station, which made getting to and from SFO pretty easy.

It's not super stabby. It's a bit of a dive though but it's cheap (sub $100 a night I think). We split it between 3 of us and it was basically we each paid for a night.

yeah...i stayed in the renoir last year. perfect place to find some crack.

I stayed at the Hotel Beresford last year. It's a bit farther from the convention center than most but still easily walkable. Not too sketchy and decently cheap. Rooms were pretty small and mediocre though.

I started to type out a description of where I'd recommend avoiding, then decided it was easier to paint over a map instead. I don't know about specific hotels, but I live close to the downtown hotel areas.

Yellow: It's sketchy, but tolerable. I feel alright walking here, but I wouldn't let, say, my mom stay there.

Red: I wouldn't stay here, and I wouldn't recommend anyone from out of town to, either. Even if you're big and tough, it's loud and quite thoroughly saturated with urine.

My research informed me that there are some hotels that provide a small one time fee for a third person. All others, I guess sneak in? lol

Huh, SF has shady areas? Seemed like the safest US city I'd ever been in (2 years ago, admittedly) ..

edit: I have this deja-vu feeling of having said the exact same thing last year so disregard me.

I stayed about two days at the Mosser San Francisco hotel. It's really good to stay and rooms are comfortable. I felt safe being there, and the price is also affordable. I think it would be perfect for your requirements.

Last 3 years I have stayed here and have had no problems, only bout 6-7 min walk to the convention center, nice clean rooms. Around there stick to Howard ST towards the convention and its pretty quiet.
