Portfolio review - opinions appreciated!

Hey everyone,

I'm one of the millions of people who are having trouble finding a job in the art field, blah blah, etc. Anyway, I need to make myself more marketable, but I'm not sure which direction I should take.

Overall, I'd like to do characters and creatures, but I know that, sadly, I won't have much luck getting that immediately. I've seen so many jobs that are multiple jobs in one - 3D Artists that will model/animate/concept, etc.

My question: Should I try to go for props/environments instead, or go more the modeller/animator route? I know in the end it's up to me, but I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts or opinions on this.

After addressing that question, I'd like to bulk out my portfolio, because I feel it isn't varied enough. Any critique or opinions would be greatly appreciated. GREATLY! :) Here's the link!

Right now I feel like you're behind the rest of the future juniors or interns that have been showcasing their work here on polycount. You need to step it up, skill-wise and creatively. An Angel-statue is cool and all but only when put into context by an environment. You need to focus on something more interesting than that a great character stands on it's own legs and you can kind of imagine the environment it'd be in just by looking at the character.

One of my favorites is still:

A good portfolio piece have good presentation as well, that means the model is lighted nicely and you show a good understanding of all the different texture maps and how to put it all together.

Go the way you feel works for you, that you want to do. Because you'll be way more passionate about it BUT don't half-ass it. :)

So just keep working hard and make sure you spend those extra hours each day and put them into your art.
