What add-ons or programs are best for rendering characters and capturing good shots. I am currently using 3ds max with an Xoliul Shader and when I render it shows a glossy grey material. I was wondering if there was a way around this so I can render this or take a good shot of my character. I heard Vray does cool stuff but anyway any ideas??

Here is what my character looks like right now

Xoliul shader is a viewport shader. It is meant to view your model and maps in real time and not in render time. If you want to render out your work you can use standard Max materials or others that are for render time.

I would personally just set up a decent 3 point light setup with your character on a simple turntable, use Xoliul shader in realtime and take a screenshot of your viewport. Presenting your real time work in...real time, is the best way to communicate you know how to do the job.

your correct v-ray does do cool stuff. but you don't have to buy/use it. i would not take anyone seriously that tells you the 'best' way to render out your turntables. part of what people look at in portfolio reviews is YOUR decisions and artistic sensibility along with anatomy textures etc. your turntable is the one chance you get to present work with total control. you don't get that option very often.

i think you should try vray, try mental ray, marmoset and anything else your interested in. that's the only way to get a satisfactory answer to your question.
