HELP!!

Hey guys n girls!

Right here's my situation,
I Live in ireland and there is no proper Game courses here to the Quality
of the courses you would find in England, America Etc. There mostly built and based upon Computer programming etc and have Zero Art modules, now the thing is because i latterly cannot afford college nor is it a practical solution for me at this very time,

I need to know one straight up honest thing

Is it possible to get a job in this Industry even if you just have a Certificate in Computer game Design *As i do*

now about that Certificate, the course was not very good to the point 90% of the course weight was offtopic, there was the other 10% which was two classes a week of Photoshop and UDK which ment back in 2010 I used to go home, do Assignment work then sit up to 3AM learning 3D max and Zbrush

but it means i still have a 'Certificate' which increase my chances right???? :/

right now iam sitting staring at my Current shotgun iam working on and really wondering if i was too subscribe to 3D sites and use the tutorials and push myself for the next 1 or 2 and get a next gen portfolio 'so to speak' would i be able to secure employment, because since the age of 15 all i have wanted to do is make video games, well considering my very first video game was Marathon 'By Bungie' = me wanting to work for bungie, but if i was to put the work in i would just be always that little bit Anxious that 'because i dont have a degree to the same standard of course that you lucky gits are getting :)* would it hinder me??

Rant over

Thanks guys! :)

the only thing a lack of degree is going to do for you is make it difficulty when it comes to applying to different countries. Getting work visa's usually require some sort of degree. But, you can offset that with years of work experience. As long as your portfolio is good, you can still get a job. Some studios rather you have a degree, and it may even say in the job page that its required, but it's a lie. That's just to deter the people who think they arent good enough. Have confidence and push yourself. Get that awesome looking portfolio, and you indeed can get a game job.

Thanks a million dude i appreciate it :)

i was thinking 'Ok if i spend the next year reallly reallly pushing myself and getting a awesome looking portfolio and even do a few freelance jobs iam sure i can then approach the likes of bungie etc??'

    Hi Munkndrunk00,

In the end it's the quality of your work and the relevance of your knowledge to the role you apply for that will get you the job. At least in most European countries.

As mentioned by slipsius a degree or higher qualification ( may be worthwhile to do ) will only help when applying to go to the likes of the US.

There is no reason why you cannot produce a high quality folio within the next few months using online learning resources that can land you a job. Just takes motivation ( which it sounds like you have ) and honest hard work.

I've been in your situation ( also from Ireland ) I studied at BCFE on the computer animation course. It was not fully relevant to games I had to spend time after completing the course redoing my folio to suit games. Took me two years to get to the level I needed to be at to land a job. This was whilst working a full time job and having fun :) I probably could have done it sooner tbh.

I guess patience also helps. As for approaching the monster studios such as Bungie etc you'll very likely need a few projects under your belt before they'd import you from Europe :P

I Fully agree and thats awesome at least its nice to get feedback and a honest opinion from someone in the same country :)

Well i mean being realistic me getting to Bungie is surely unpractical at this stage of my Career lol, ive been eyeing up DICE *Sweden* and Io Interactive *Denmark* which i would happily try to get too

And your right i defo do have motivation its just hard sometimes too rely on your own faith in it because you could be working soo hard and in the end it ends up flopping

and awesome ballyfermot seems good :) i just dont have the money time or travel practicality that would get me there before 9am to do the course

but with hardwork and extra coffee over the next year iam hoping il have a good solid portfolio together

i Really appreciate the feedback :)
