Greetings!
I'm Volantk, and this will be my sketchbook.
I hope to show progress and improvement.
Feel free to critique anything and everything posted here.
Some backstory: I've been doing 3D as a hobby since sometime 2006, with relatively slow progress at times. Since the beginning, I've been stuck in a cartoony style, due to fear of stepping out of my comfort zone and dealing with sculpting and/or textures. I've also "learned" to see shapes the hard way, with no 2D skills to mention, and feel limited by this.
That outlines what I want to improve on; better understanding of light, form, color, etc. In short, I suppose you could say I just want to become
better.
To achieve this fantastically vague goal, I plan to do more of everything, specifically drawing, both on paper and digital, as well as sculpting.
For my current/old work, check out my
deviantArt gallery.
I hope it'll be a nice trip

Here's a sculpt I'm working on instead. Finally giving Zbrush a serious attempt, after many hours of plain old dicking around.
And a render test in Blender. A long way to go in terms of composition, lighting and, well, everything.
Eye shading (Should have used reference. Didn't.)
Some kpop artist. Unfinished. Need to work on faces in general.
Walking through a tropical waterfall. Turned out better than expected!
Hufsa (The Groke) from Moomin
Some autumn river.
I think I should simplify his face a bit. At least remove some of the bumps. Though they will stick out a lot less when textured and rendered. Hmmm.
I think I'll be going for complete black and white in the final image.

I did a study for my planned next character project. It went a lot quicker than expected. Pretty happy with that.

Meanwhile, here's more giraffe exploration. I just had to do one in 3D as well. Not satisfied with the shape of it, but I didn't have much time. This was made as a quick break from a long crunch day, at 2AM at the office.

His name is Spiky McAlienface.
Good job!
Good job!
And can you be a bit more specific? I'm not sure what waterfall effects you mean, or in what picture.
I plain forgot about his ear.
I should really look into anatomy before doing more random sculpting. It kind of feels like a waste of time winging it like I do now, even though I'm rather satisfied with the result.
Learnt a lot about what kind of brush I prefer here. Very fun. Took a bit longer than usual though, due to trying to raise the bar a little.
Anatomy schmanatomy.
Did some good old poly-by-poly modeling tonight. Trying to get this to look like someone. Going ok so far, but something is rather off.
I heard it helps to actually use reference.
Skull study. It's getting better, I guess, but not good enough yet. Weird jaw, and I didn't do the teeth properly. They're all front teeth.
Some fat guy.
I don't know. I wanted to make a distinct upper lip.
A man.
Aaand an angry man.
I have a list of things to fix, but we'll see how that goes. Might do another round of it when Blender finally gets SSS in Cycles.
Very early WIP. Just exploring what a giraffe in clothes might look like.
Here's tonight's poop.
To do: Clothes, background, better rain splash effects and overall wetness.
This one was inspired by the awesome stuff by Justin Maller at http://facet.la/
Wanted to see if I could recreate the same effects, and this mess is what came out. Pretty fun to play around with.
What I'm not ready to do is choose between b/w and color, so here's both.
Not much sculpting done lately. Busy finishing a game instead Have also started doing more traditional art. Mostly abstracts with a brush pen so far. Will scan and post later.
Here's the most recent sculpt.
And a mobile photo of some brush pen shenanigans.
