3ds Max 2010 to UDK Material ID's Not Importing

A lot of people I know, both at my company, and out, tend to have this running problem where we assign a Sub Object Mat to a model with multiple material ID's and export as an ASE and into UDK.

Most of the time this works, but ever so often it just utterly breaks and will only show up with 1 ID or won't change anything upon re-importing.

I've searched all over the googlewebs and have come up short on an answer. I think it would be great to try and tackle this problem once and for all.

Steps for problem (A theoretical 2 polygon mesh):
1. Create Sub Object Material with 2 materials.
2. Assign a bitmap to each diffuse.
3. Assign material to mesh
4. Select face 1, set material ID to 1.
5. Select face 2, set material ID to 2.
6. Select object > Export Selected as ASE > insure materials/smoothing groups are checked in export otions
7. Import mesh into UDK

Now this should work. It usually does. But ever so often. DENIED!
