Lightmass importance messes up interior lighting

So, I'm having a problem with a scene that is both interior and exterior.
When I enclose my building in a lightmass importance volume the exterior renders fine, with indirect light from my environment and everything, but the interior gets really crappy and blotchy. i tried adding more lights to the interior but also these lights render really bad.

If I remove the volume, the outside renders as if there was no environment, all dark shadows, but at least the interior lights are treated nicely and I can get a good lighting even if I might need to fake some skylight from the windows.

QUESTION: Is there a way to get good interior AND exterior lighting in the same scene?
