My friend and I will be working a collab for this project. He has the user name Shadowsaint. We've chosen to roll with Sand King and we're going for an Egyptian style to his items.
Shawn's items are the grey background while mine are the red. Let me know what you think as far as the style or areas we can improve. We are very open to critiques as we want to make the best possible set for this contest.

Looking forward to seeing how this comes along ^^
Everything looks exceptionally cool, the only thing that stands out a bit to me is the helmet/hood. I think it should be a bit more organic, natural and fuse with his form more. For some reason I can see SK wearing metal armor but overly manufactured cloth somehow looks unnatural, at least to me. Hope that helps.
Tooled around with some more mask shapes tonight. I'm not really sold on any of these but I figured it would make some good forms to try out and see what people think.
Spudnik - I tried with the mask to pull out some more hard edge shapes. If we go a mask route we're planning on making it look like a sculpted mask or something similar to a sarcophagus.
I want to make items ro SankKing too.
But as I understand from character guidlines - there isn't item set for tail.
And for arms - we should change them but not create attachment. Because on other character - all items for changing already exist.
So I not sure about SandKing's head - it is separate mech and texture - maybe we should change head. Ther is not Helmet material in it's archive
Maybe I wrong
We may have to do an entire new head from scratch to do the helms.
I hope the tail has a slot, need to get clarification from the valve guys. Modifying the tail to give it the Egyptian bird or scarab is a big set piece for our set.
I am the other artist working on this set with Praetus. I will have more detailed should mock ups for you guy tonight.
Thanks for the great feed back so far.
As for the arms, where we did our paintovers is where the arm pieces actually start. So, in that effect the "Arm" slots are essentially the pinchers or hands. Anything that is added for armor we more or less figure we need to remake the entire piece as opposed to just attaching a chunk of geometry.
For the new masks I am leaning towards the shape of number 4 although I may make more variations of it tonight to see where else I can push it. I really like the cylinder shape at the head top as it resembles the longer pharaoh headpiece. number six is cool on it's own but I don't know if it really identifies as Egyptian stylings or pharaoh for that matter. I'll try and get some more done tonight.
Didn't get as much time tonight to work on this as I thought I would. Hopefully I can get some color themes going tomorrow. We're looking at Red and gold as primary colors for this. I'm work on some trim schemes when I get some more time.
Various shoulder pad ideas for our Egyptian styled Sand King armor.
Thanks for the feedback so far.
Its really killer! I love how creepy he is! he looks mad awesome!
Might have a chance to do the colored break outs tomorrow.
Oh, color theory, why must you hate me so. Still more to do with this. I want to test out some details and some color variations. We want to add some red to the mask so I'll try and nail out some overlays with different effects drawn on.
Some color styles for the mask. Also I'm torn on the eye color personally. While the green matches the original, I think the red fits the color scheme better for the set we're making. Let me know what you think.
Still working on it..
Normals and AO baked out. I'm not sure if I'll egt anymore work done tonight. Hurricane incoming >.<
I started with the texture last night. there is still a ways to go on this though. I'll update as I get more done.
Leg armor value mock up. Colors will be same as shoulders and weapons armor.
Finished out the bakes for the shoulders. I'll be passing these off to Shawn for texturing and then I'll be starting the weapon claws and feet.
Tail concept.
This part is our optional 5th. If time becomes an issue our armor is a full set without it.
Arms are baked out for Base AO and normals and passed onto Shawn. Next for me to make is the feet.
Legs are modeled and baked. Tail is next for me.
I'm going to be keeping an eye on this, and I've got a little group of Sand King friends I'll turn this to. I'm probably not good enough to make a polycount submission, but I've contributed a few items to the workshop. I hope I can give some good input. I look forward to the tail. I hope you can fit everything with the poly count.
Keep it up!!
So, all the stuff works in game as far as rigging goes. We just have to finish up the material stuff and we're good to go. Is there a way to view everything on your character before submitting or is it just a one at a time thing?
