max problem, loses focus when selecting object

i have this issue at home and at work, both max 2009
when i'm working and i select a object sometimes.. most times it will lose focus and my screen will go blank as if the viewport camera instantly mvoes to a far off location, i then have to press z to get focus back on what i'm working on, its a total pain in the ass. anyone else have this issue an found out how to fix?
also in ortho mode when it does this
