AMD processor question

so xmass is on the horizon and I might get to finally build a new comp.

I noticed that AMD 8-cores are about half the price of an i7 4- core.

my current comp is an AMD athelon dual core, and its been a trooper

Is there something wrong with AMDs these days?

i7's tend to render and bake a LOT after then AMD, I don't have a price by price comparison of the 2 brands though, but I'm sure you can find one.

Don't listen to the people bashing AMD, they're just sour because they paid twice as much for a processor that isn't twice as good.

The 8 core Bulldozer isn't the leap forward it sounds like though.. I would probably go for a Phenom X4 or X6, you'll get just about as much performance as you will with the Bulldozer for much less.

If people just wanted the best performance to price ratio everyone would have $600 computers. People tend to set a limit on what they are willing to spend, and then pick parts using that price point. AMD's are definitely the way to go if you want to cheapest but most powerful rig possible. But if you want to drop $1.2k on a computer, i7's are the most bang for your buck. And they do handle rendering and baking much quicker.

probably gonna go with an i7 3770. not top of the line, but good enough to last a long time.
whole thing is lookin to be about $1100, big chunk of that is the 256gig ssd, and a weapons grade power supply of 1200w. I might ditch the power supply for something more reasonable.

In my current build Ive gone for an i7 3770 and a 256 SSD. Can I ask why the ssd is such a big chunk of your budget? Theyre quite cheap now, dont get ripped off.

Also, a PSU of that high a wattage is wholly unneccesary if youre not using two GPUs.

ok then so I can just use my 850w thats in this comp, and the ssd is a samsung thats $200, and has a faster read rate then the others (they run about $150).

I would say hold off... keep an eye on amazon. Frequent sales on SSDs. I got a Crucial M4 for $164. Not sure if the Samsung is better, is it?

it had good reviews and a random read rate that was double that of most others. I should go find a hardware buyers guide on ssds though. i dont know much about them.
