My own guess fearian is that either PCer's gets an ulimited amount of keys so everyone who are gonna enter can do so. They release Dota 2 as they annonunce the PC competition. The one I think is happening is that they are releasing it with the competition.
@Tekoppar, they aren't releasing it for a few months most likely if they're really waiting for all of the heroes to be added in before they release it and there's still 18 heroes to be added.
I see that as a bad move from Valve, the kids these days wants new heroes each month. Releasing the game before every old hero has made it would be better since it gives the kids something new to look forward too. That's one of the reason I think LoL is so damn popular, you get something new every two weeks.
kinda kills the excitement to be leaked! I hope nothing gets confirmed just to add a little suspense!
surely not everyone has dota though? I know a new wave of people where let into the beta, but there's still a bunch waiting for keys.
There's a free spectator client where you can go to the Workshop submission menus and go through the flow. I haven't tested it myself though, since I don't even know if I can get the spectator client already having the legit one. It's possible people without beta access can submit.
My personal take on this is that, it's fine. I love to see two of my favorite things come together, Polycount and Valve. It's great that the developers and community can team up like this.
However, I can't say I am super excited considering I've already been making dota 2 stuff for a few months and gotten a couple things in the game. Hopefully there's some kind of additional jazz. Otherwise, it just means more skillful artists populating the workshop to compete against.
In that way, it's a bit disappointing, I like the current open-season where there isn't a ton of prolific contributors making items. It could easily become futile like the TF2 workshop where less than 2% of all submissions get added to the game. Though, there's a lot of heroes to populate with stuff, and they've been adding items a lot more rapidly than TF2. I guess we'll see soon.

They'll continue to add heroes into Dota2 after it's "release". Icefrog just added 2 new heroes into Dota a few days ago and those are going to be added into Dota2 so as he keeps doing that they'll keep being put into Dota2 as well.
Here I hoped they would try balancing things out before adding new heroes, but I guess games like this will never be balanced and just suffer two things being OP balances itself out. I thought he left the Dota team and let someone else take over? But we should probably stop this discussion since it's off-topic.

Did you read the patch notes yesterday? The 6.75 Dota patch that was also added into Dota2 tweaked a lot of stuff on pretty much every hero. Lycan and Morph had nerfs, Sven and Sniper had buffs, etc. Here's a link to the patch notes.
I have read those now, but I had no idea Dota 2 even had an update until I noticed a Magnus was suddenly being played in my game. One of the things Steam really does bad. But Lycan has been needing a nerf forever so that's no real surprise to see. But I still think they do the hole, making two things OP and the balance each other out. Sure I can say that they are getting closer to getting away from it, but they are still lingering in that territory.

but that is one thing that i like on dota, on steam games in general
on league of legend for example when you try to start the game you get the message that you need to update it
sometimes you want to play that time and dont want to wait
btw, if you want you can change that in the configuration on the steam =]
Tvidotto You mean the "Notify me.."? I have that checked and the only thing I get is "You get new DLC for this game you own". I too love that steam auto updates and does everything for you. But I would love if it could tell me that it had update game X, just a little window before I start the game where I could just press OK or view patch noes.

if you put in an application now you'll probably get an invite before the competition starts... took me like 5 days to get mine. (got it a week ago, and have been enjoying it ever since)
Gir, I 'completed' that survey a few weeks ago putting in made up guesses (no idea about moba's!) and got in. Turns out I'm not that interested in DotA! :P
I'll probably try and enter the comp though making swords is fun.

Good. Leaves the rest of us a chance.
Hahahaha
However, it is still awesome that there even IS a comp. xD
This sounds dangerously close to a challenge.
+1

I'm awesome, XD they will pick the top 3.
In all seriousness this is a great idea either way, maybe they are just teasing us to see the reaction.
Time to work on a weapon for practice then, game on.
Somehow i hope it would be a prop or environment contest,
but i dont think this gonna happen
Woohoo what a great environment contest that would be
The contest will be that you redesign the entire theme of the map and the reward is a lifetime job at Valve.

I guess it's slightly off topic but meh, not much else going on in this thread yet.

lol yep, how long ago was the last contest? so i know how we have to wait for the next.

you got a good point there
that is something that really needs

I'll probably try and enter the comp though making swords is fun.
