Hey guys. :poly124: I've never really tried my hand at realistic character work, so I thought I'd try something from scratch.

Here's a WIP female Nude, sculpted from a sphere using dynamesh. I *think* I'm happy with the proportions, but critique is welcome. Once I feel good to go on form, I'm going to try playing with FiberMesh for hair. Then toss some clothes on her.

And either shorten the torso or stretch the legs a bit (Stretching the legs will give better results)

    Hi nate,

You're doing great! Very nice detail on the hands and feet.
But there are some fundamental mistakes in your proportions.
If you want to accentuate the feminity of the character , her shoulders should be less broad and her hips more broad.

Something typical in feminine anatomy is that the shoulders are more narrow than the hips. if you would change that you will get a more realistic feeling.

and I also have the feeling that the upperbody is a little bit to long in comparison with the legs.

    Have fun sculpting!

Parts of this are looking ok. Hip to shoulder ratio is way off. The whole lower body is too small. Hands and feet looking pretty good solo but appear too large on the sculpt. Upper skull shape seems a bit off.

I'll do a draw over in a bit.

Can you be a bit more specific. Perhaps cite some image ref/examples?

After looking at a lot of reference, I decided that the hip ratio probably has to do with taste in female forms.

However, I did think she could stand a bit more hip-curve, so I adjusted that, relaxed the breasts a bit, and gave a little more of an hourglass form. Also lengthened the legs slightly and made the hands/feet smaller.

I think I'm ready to call this good unless anyone else sees anything that makes her look downright deformed.:poly122:

Some of this looks really great, but like some others before me said, the proportions are quite off.

I'm not very well-versed in anatomy, but this is what I'd suggest doing:

    Hope I could help. :)

Looking really good man, although i think you should thicken the wrists a bit, they seem too flat.

Nice! I think the arms are too long though.

Like the others have said her shoulders are to wide, and way to man like. Also her breast weight isn't right, unless you are looking at someone with breast implants. You get weight that pushes down on top of the breast and they widen out at the bottom. Look of reference of b or c cup sized women and pay close attention.

    K. Lots of little tweaks. brought the shoulders way in.
Relaxed the breasts a bit - she's supposed to be model-esque and perky, so whether it looks like she has silicone or not, I think I'm settling on these breasts.

Does she look human yet? :poly124: Perhaps more importantly, is it looking *better*?

I'm really excited to move onward to hair and clothes.

Hey dude the mid section is looking really nice. I think what's throwing it off the most is how broad the shoulders are compared to her hips. It would be fine if that's what you're going for but the rest of her isn't particularly muscular.

You feel like the shoulders are too broad, even in the last post? Or do you just mean she has too much deltoid muscle??

Yeah still feels wide to me. Draw a line from the edge shoulders straight down. Typically it would connect the hips to the shoulder.

    Okay.

    BOOM!

Thank you all for the critique. Im settling on this as the final for the body. I'm ready to move on. I think your crits really helped, this came a long way in the past few hours I think. I'm going to move onto messing with fibermesh for hair, then clothes/armor/whatever. I'll keep posting progress.

The shoulders to hips ratio is better, but she still looks out of proportion - her torso is really long (and shoulders quite wide) and a result her limbs look really stubby. It's certainly not inconceivable that a real woman would have proportions like these, but she doesn't come across as "model-esque".

She's a bit of a mish-mash of body types too. She's got a pretty powerfully built upper body which is something I actually really like about the model, but her belly is a bit emaciated with ribs sticking out to a rather unhealthy degree, while the butt and legs are a bit more soft and curvy.

There's a lot of stuff going on here that's really well executed, it's just a matter of nudging things about a tad until it all coalesces into a great model.

Thank you for the crit, but in all honesty, I have to disagree with that one, Maybe it's about taste, but here are some quick refs:

    refnf.jpg

As for the ribs looking "emaciated" again, I prefer the more fit, defined ribs that you can start to see in the above, HOWEVER, i do agree that in her arms-down pose the ribs were just a little much, so I smoothed that area out considerably.

I'm really *truly* done with the body from here on out. If anything else seems odd about her its "Just the way the 3D gods made her" :P In seriousness thank for the crits. I think they really helped. Just look at the difference from day one.

    No more touchy-touchy!

On to clothes and hair already!!!!

I agree with the others, you shouldn't call it done too quickly, there is obviously something weird and I'm sure you will see it later, but too late.

I took an average girl to do a comparison. Don't know if the shoulder are too large, maybe it's your taste, but the arms seem too short, the elbows are just below the boobs and the wrists far above the crotch. Also, she has exactly the same proportions as a 7 heads 1/3 girl but she is 7 heads 3/4, maybe this is weird.

I noticed that the waist is too high, too.

    final.JPG

Now I think that if a lot of people tell you that something is wrong, it's maybe because something IS wrong, and it's not a matter of taste...

I'm always happy to take critique. And yes, as much as it pains me, I agree with the arm length and head size. I didn't actually need to adjust much of the hips.

Here on out though, people are built differently, so I don't think I'm making any more adjustments. That side-by-side works for me and I'm comfortable with it.
