Ok guys it time to start. (I just got home from work:))
the winner of the poll is.....
"Medieval/Fantasy"
The first part is going to be some 2d prep work. As a little warm up before we dive in to 3D
Your first objective: is to make a ref sheet look for things you wish to put on your character and draw your character's armor and weapons. It does not have to be good it could even be a stick figure, just get an idea in your head. Know what you want to add.
Bonus Objective: If you get done early make a background with trees, wall whatever you want.
What is a Ref Sheet?
An Ref Sheet is a group of pictures that are put together in one document for you to easily get to. Art is 80% observation so you need some thing to work of of.
one of my old Ref Sheet's I made

The chracter I made with that ref sheet

2)Place Your Finished work (for this part of the challenge) here
3)As the poll said only Medieval/Fantasy, and no hybrid of it
4)Have fun

day 1 - gather inspiration,
hit google hard and find all kinds of fantasy/medieval reference, male, female, monsterous, human, goat, whatever. just get everything that has that feel to it and cram it into a folder.
day 2 - refine your inspiration,
go through the folder you made on day 1, looking for something that strikes you. i mean REALLY hits you and screams "MODEL SOMETHING LIKE ME!". then find all the other images like that one that you can, if it's an elven warrior girl, find all kinds of elven warrior girls, and delete everything else. create a moodboard filled with pictures of your chosen subject.
days 3 through 6 (3 days total) - rough sketches based on your moodboard,
look at your moodboard, print it out, print out individual pictures from it, pin them to the walls around your monitor, and start sketching, copy bits you like, remove bits you don't like, this is the point where your idea should start taking shape. if you decide you want to copy a concept directly, replicate it! try sketching the piece in a veriety of different poses and angles, you want to get to the point where no matter what angle you're doing it from, it looks like the same piece.
days 7 and 8 - refine that concept.
after going through all the other stuff, by now you'll have a really solid idea of what you want to do. you'll have drawn your chosen piece a lot, and you'll be able to come up with some really solid final references to go from. keep all the old reference! all of it is still good, but the point of these final references is to really nail down the details. if it's a male, it's all about the tone of the character, if it's a female, find those feminine lines and curves! if it's a building/environment then get the character of that building in there... make it look ominous, or enticing, or like a utopia, whatever it was that really caught your attention back in the early days, get it in there!
good luck everyone.
I for one think there is such a overflow of weaponized characters that something different would be a nice change of pace.

i'm going to start my inspiration hunting. hopefuly I'll have something to show for it soon.
Are we supposed to create the WIP-thread in this forum section?
god damn the american day/month system.
@almighty_gir: Not just your guide, it's also just time itself. I need a day to draw, but I need to gather reference before. Yesterday would have been optimum, but again, I had no reference. So yh, it's about time altogether itself.
@I-ninja: I will try do it in the next 4 days, however, if I am unable to, can you extend the deadline to 8 days. If unable, then at least by one or two more days?
and yes post your wip thread in this part of the forums
and post your finished work here
10/10 is coming up fast
And you 3D is the next part 10/11
which will completely invalidate the point of the course.
If there is another NLC I'll join in.
if you HAVE been drawing then you're following the course properly. all i was saying is that most people won't have, and that those people were most likely to suck at the rest of the course as a result.
i don't know how to put enough emphasis on this, the reason why Rogue turned out so good for me, was that i spent almost 3 weeks non stop drawing women in preparation.
I'll get back to working on my concept when I get home from work tonight.
One question about this challenge. Will we be getting feedback from you and I-ninja throughout the process or just in WIP threads from random polycounters?
My WIP post got no comments at all. It's a bit discouraging. I'd rather have someone say "Hey, this needs work/sucks. Here's what you need to do to fix it" rather than silence.
I must confess I feel somewhat the same way. However, I've started to prepare the next step.
@TigerFeet the Challenge is open
Maybe I should join in, but I find join your own challenge makes the challenge look like you made it for yourself.
If I get myself caught up on school then I'll jump back in.
I'll update my WIP thread if so.
BTW when the 3d portion starts will there be sculpting involved? I'm an ultra noob in that area.
Here's my thread : NLC-PyrZern : Female Warrior in Cloth Armor
