I think it's possible to capture in-game video with Virtual Dub. I know it is possible to set it to capture AVI of your desktop, and anything running on it. (good for tutorials) I'm not sure if it would work for games running in full-screen, though.
Camtasia would be my bet too. I found most other 'free' capture programs to be really nasty to use, if you don't configure them Codecs properly right off the bat or enable certain functions.
ive been using cam studio recently for simple short screen captures - works really well
but if your doing tutorials i recommend camtasia its awesome for screen capture and file sizes are kept pretty small as well but at the same time i would still only use it for 30mins at a time, save a chunk then start again - just in case anything goes wrong
