[UDK] Tooting Bec/Broadway Underground Station WIP

Hey everyone, this is my first piece of work I have posted on here to get some critique (go easy on me haha :)). I'm not the greatest of artists at the moment but hope that help from here will hopefully make me progress to a much higher standard. I have only just finished the first year of my university games art course, so hopefully within a year ill have some nice looking work.

Enough of an 'about me' introduction haha. This UDK environment is a London Underground station, which my sister decided to challenge me to do over the summer. This is where I am up to now....

Any feedback would be great, though mainly the floor is a section i'm really struggling on, and it isn't completely textured at the moment as you can see :)

    Hey dude,

Well i would say there is definitely a lack of atmosphere right now.
The lighting is really boring.. everything is very bright etc.

But first of all to the assets:
    - Textures look very flat / most parts are just plain colors
-> add detail (dirt, used edges etc.)
    - In my opinion the tunnel could use some more polygons as you can really make out the hard egdes right now.

-> first of all get some more detail into the geometry (you can use more polys)
-> add detail and love ;D to the textures (normal map, specular, maybe decals)

And last but not least you should definitely overthink the lighting of your scene ;)

On my portfolio you can see a metro station presented in the CryEngine3 (maybe you can get sth out of it).

    Keep going man! Good start!

    Cheers

Cheers for the feedback :) any suggestions with the lighting? or do u just think it needs toning down a bit? It also might be my post processing settings, as I have a bit more bloom than usual haha.

I'll get right on to what you mentioned though, its good to get a perspective from another artist :) and i'll take a look at your station too, thanks

Well besides the already mentioned points i would add some contrast in terms of lighting...
What kind of setting would you like to achieve?
Some sort of vizualisation style (clean and pretty)?
Or some fucked up style (i think more realistic, especially for a metro station :D)?

First of all you should think about which mood you want to achieve and then think about how you can achieve this within the lighting. Maybe add more light sources with slightly different colors.

Oh and one more thing: dont know if its just me but the ground texture looks too big in terms of scale.. i think the plates etc. should be smaller ;)

Hmmmn I guess thats always been my problem with texturing, its always 'too clean'. I need to grunge stuff up abit and take more notice of wear and tear on objects.

Working on that aspect now, whilst adding some more geometry, adjusting the lighting and finishing the diffuse textures throughout the station. I'll post something up shortly :) thanks

The train looks too small when compared to the rest of the stuff.
  • seanburrows
I'll scale it up a bit or scale the other objects down... though underground trains are fairly low in height, any tall person could jump a little bit inside and bang their head :P haha

    Slight improvement?

Added more geometry to the curve of the tunnel, dimmed the lighting down a bit with some colour (too much colour?), added some grunge to the ceiling and right side..... still working on the left side. I'll probably add some more geometry to the left wall tomorrow, and add some models on the ceiling like a beam and some cameras/wires.

this already looks much better! ;)
you are definitely going into the direction but it still needs a lot of work.
again, you should scale down the floor texture in tiling and of course add normal maps and specular maps (especially the left wall and the floor texture need them).

one more thing jumps into my eye: the end of the tunnel, where the train should leave the station, looks too small. maybe its jus the angle or sth but it doesnt look like train would fit into the hole ^^

again, much improvement but still a lot of work to do.

Is this meant to be quite a cartoon-like environment, or is it meant to be realistic? I get a feeling from the cupboard thing, and the colours, and especially the clock and the sizing and scale, that it's meant to be a little bit fantasy-esque
