3ds Max 2013 - Weird problem with material or polygons

I edited some polygons on the object and suddenly everything has these weird shadows and stuff everywhere like http://i.imgur.com/pWNJ7.png and http://i.imgur.com/YRbwg.png

My diffuse is done correctly. After I changed the polys, I added unwrap uvw modifier and exploded by angle. I've done dozens of other objects' diffuse like this and it's worked great.

This change to the weird shadow thing was abrupt and happened when I was editing polygons on the object. This has happened before on completely separate scenes but I ignored it.

Any idea what could cause this? Thanks.
