I was recently given an opportunity to complete the Naughty Dog texture art test, and even though I have no idea if I was successful or not, it has easily been one of the best experiences of my life. I have to say that I don't think I would ever have been so lucky if it wasn't for polycount.com.
When I was first introduced to the Polycount community, I came here to find inspiration and great art. Over time I found a lot of invaluable information, both technical and practical, and after more time I even discovered my new home page - the Polycount wiki.
I love meeting new people, working with people, discovering new techniques, new styles and love to constantly improve myself as an artist. Regrettably, I've only ever been what I hear is called a "lurker." I constantly feel guilty that I'm not contributing more to the Polycount community, especially considering how much I take away from it. When I completed my Masters last year, I had every intention of filling the Polycount forums with my ambitions and aspirations, but was spoiled with an opportunity to work on Ridley Scott's "Prometheus," and never saw the light of day again. Naturally, I threw all of my weight into this experience, and had to put all my personal projects on hold.
Of course, as soon as I finished working, I was going to get straight back into updating my portfolio, but half a day into that, I was asked to do some texturing for Trion World's, "Defiance."
Following THAT, I made it another half day into creating some new work for my portfolio before being contracted to work on various TVC's and iDevice (is that what people are calling them?) games, here in Australia.
Unfortunately, everything is under NDA, and I'm told that I can't show anything until late 2013 (at the earliest), so I'm still in this place where I continue to be a lurker, and all I can do for now, is say thank you. times infinite. +1
I can't wait to finally start posting my art work into these forums, and I hope that everyone who has ever received any constructive feedback (or cat pictures) from the polycount community, understands that it is a huge honour to have someone from this website, take the time to tell them how they can become a better artist. I personally can't wait to see threads dedicated to telling me what sucks about my brick walls!
((Actually, if there are any Naughty Dog employees on here, could you please go and take a look at the texture art test for "Timothy Eustace," from Australia -- I really need some heavy critiquing - HEAVY....)
I have no idea what everyone's profession is in these forums, but you have all been extremely selfless, and I hope you know there's a lot of lurkers out there, who silently appreciate how great it is to have polycount.com in existence.
If I ever get the chance, I will owe you all a beer. Or a cider (I don't really like beer). Actually, make that a strawberry milk. I seriously love strawberry milk.

Best of luck with the art test dude, so you can at least start saving for our 45k milkshakes.
Are you sure you're talking about Polycount?
It's OK, I'm here, I just went out for coffee.
1/10, would not bang.
damn, shes missed out there
I apologise for completely forgetting that banana milk was an option
I'd also like to join in with you and thank those that post more often. I'm a heavy lurker and frequent the Technical Talk section often, just to read about other's peoples issues whether they relate to mine or not. I feel like I've learned more on here than I have in college.
No capital letters, self-loathing, projecting angst, lack of proper grammar, making up words and making assumptions about everything while missing the gist of the joke that was there forever on the internet, to which I apologize, but can't since didn't pick up on sarcasm ;P
Yes, she indeed did miss out.
PS: I think we're doing pretty well on the arsehole count.
This doesn't break our strawberry milk agreement does it?
If they are the kind of jokes you dig, then fair play, but i dont get em, and im not going to laugh along
So what Ace-Angel did there, was be all like "girlz rezolution iz all bad and stuff (argh, no, I can't commit to typing like that....)" then he was all like "CRITIQUE!" and it was all like, "could be better!" and then everyone had milk and it was awesome.
So no need to apologize - misunderstandings are easily solved over a game of ping pong.
Ha! I see what you did there.
Good times.
Just the grass.
that bloody grass....
So lame
You don't see enough "Thank you PC!" threads these days... That is really cool of you.
However! It was still an extremely awesome experience, and I can't thank Naughty Dog enough for letting me get an inside look at their processes. It's made me realize just how much improvement I need to make, and thanks to Polycount, I know just where to start.
On that note, I will still owe everyone* a drink. Especially now that I've been made aware of this blueberry flavour! - I've not seen that here in Australia!
I long to live overseas....
Work on the portfolio and take this as a learning experience.
